Vertical road signs: manufacture and sale with NBR 14644 retroreflective sheeting

SinalServ manufactures and sells vertical road signs in aluminium composite (ACM), galvanized steel or fiberglass, with retroreflective sheeting to Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 14644, from Type I to Type X. Every sign gets galvanized steel stiffeners sized by its area.

Sta. 01 · Process

How is a road sign manufactured?

Making a sign takes three steps: cleaning the sheet, applying the reflective sheeting with a pneumatic laminator and fitting the galvanized steel stiffeners. Each step is there to ensure the sheeting stays bonded and the sign stays rigid in service.

  1. Substrate cleaningSheets are cleaned with a non-abrasive sponge and a 1:1 solution of water and isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Sheeting applicationThe retroreflective sheeting is applied with a pneumatic laminator for proper bonding to the substrate. Sheeting meets the ABNT NBR 14644 specifications.
  3. StiffenersGalvanized steel structural and mounting stiffeners receive an adhesion-promoting primer, VHB double-sided tape and, finally, a silicone bead that stops water from collecting.

What is the difference between reflective sheeting types?

The ABNT NBR 14644 sheeting types differ in their optical construction: glass beads or microprisms. SinalServ works with Types I, II, III, VII and X, according to the retroreflectivity specification of each project.

Sta. 03 · Substrate

What materials can a sign be made of?

SinalServ manufactures signs on three substrates: aluminium composite (ACM), galvanized steel and fiberglass. The substrate is set by the project and client specification.

Sta. 04 · Stiffeners

How are sign stiffeners sized?

Galvanized steel stiffeners are sized by the sign area: up to 3 m², a C-channel; over 3 m², 1 1/4″ × 1/8″ angles.

Sta. 05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions about road signs

ABNT NBR 14644 classifies retroreflective sheeting into types. SinalServ uses Type I (engineering grade), Type II (high intensity), Type III (high-intensity prismatic), Type VII (diamond grade) and Type X (diamond grade cubed).

A sign can be manufactured on three substrates: aluminium composite (ACM), galvanized steel or fiberglass. The choice follows the project and client specification.

Glass-bead sheeting uses glass spheres to return headlight light; prismatic sheeting uses microprisms. In the NBR 14644 classification, Type II uses encapsulated glass beads, while Types III, VII and X typically use non-metallized microprisms. Type I can have either construction.

After the sheet is cleaned with a non-abrasive sponge and a 1:1 solution of water and isopropyl alcohol, the sheeting is applied with a pneumatic laminator, which ensures proper bonding to the substrate.

Structural and mounting stiffeners are galvanized steel. Signs up to 3 m² get a C-channel; over 3 m², 1 1/4″ × 1/8″ angles. The stiffener is bonded with VHB double-sided tape over primer and sealed with a silicone bead.

The silicone bead over the VHB double-sided tape stops water from collecting between the stiffener and the sign, which over time would weaken the bond.
